Days 4 & 5

We're in Republic, WA right now (at 10 am), after a very short day of about 25 miles or so.  Our plan is to set up tomorrow's early morning climb up Sherman Pass, which appears steeper than either Washington Pass or Loup Loup Pass.  That allows us to beat the heat on the way up, and should make for an easy ride after the summit.

From Okanogan we headed north to Tonasket, where I had a 24 mile climb to Wauconda.  When we got there we found the campground not to our liking, so we backtracked 9 miles to Bonaparte Lake Campground.  It was pretty much ideal for all of us - we got a campsite on the lake for $12 and Lana had an abundance of chipmunks to entertain her.

These folks stopped to show their chopped Studebaker trailer
to Carey & Alea on the Wauconda climb.
Cary, Alea & Lana offer support on the climb up the hill to Wauconda.
Steve stopping for ice cold water and fuel.
Lana & Steve ride in the camper for the 9 mile backtrack to Bonaparte Lake.
Our campsite at Bonaparte Lake.
Lana riding shotgun.
Cary & Alea at Wauconda Pass.
The swift decent into Republic, WA
After tomorrow's summit we'll be on relatively flat terrain that follows river valleys, and will likely have better access to the internet.

  1. Enjoying following your adventure and living vicariously through your blog! My first 2 wheeled love is mountain biking, but all cycling is good! I've seen photos of that Studebaker trailer online before...pretty neat; how cool that y'all saw it in person! The campsite at the lake looks nice. What kind of temps are you guys having? 100+ degree heatwave here in Texas for the next 10 days or so.....supposed to hit 108 next week! Be careful & stay hydrated! I love seeing all the photos; the last one with the riders and your CampInn/rig is my favorite so far!

    1. It was in the mid 90s and sunny the first two days on the road. It was overcast and 80s for days 3 & 4, and only got into the 70s today. Tomorrow might get up to 80. We were expecting mid-90s or higher through much of this area, so the cooler temperatures are very welcome.

It was pretty amazing that the Studebaker would happen by in literally the middle of nowhere - halfway between Tonasket and Republic. I guess we must be close to the home nest. ;-)
