Day 166: Springhill, LA

It was yet another hot, humid day.  With an early start, Alea managed to cover 46 miles before noon.  The terrain was mainly low to moderate rollers, most of the road surfaces were smooth, and there were shoulders or low traffic volumes most of the way (except in the few small towns that we passed through).

I think this is the first flat that Alea fixed herself this year...
Of course Alea had a flat tire just outside of Haynesville, where there was zero signal for our Republic phones.  So I had no idea that she had been delayed.  I was waiting for her farther along our route, and finally doubled back to see if anything was wrong.  I found her a couple miles back, plugging along in the heat.

We are camped at the City of Springhill's Anthony RV Park ($25, power, water, air conditioned adjustable showers), which at first glance looked pretty rustic and rundown.  But as part of the site there is a fairly new, air conditioned event space (probably for club meetings or a wedding reception, etc), where the toilets and showers are located.  We called city hall to make certain that we would have access to the latter at night and early in the morning.  Once we had that assurance we picked out a campsite.

The first campsite was right next to the bathrooms and had a bit of shade.  It seemed more than adequate for our overnight stay, but when we tried to connect to power a dozen or more angry hornets came storming out of the power pedestal.  We tried again a few sites away: same result.  The third time was the charm, so we set up for the night.

Of course there is limited shade (a few small trees, mostly), so we envisioned ourselves moving our chairs and fan every fifteen or twenty minutes as our tree's shadow crept along the ground.  But then I remembered the empty, air conditioned event center.  So we unhitched and parked behind the center, where we unloaded our chairs and various means of passing the time (Chromebooks, books, Lana's ball, etc) and spent the afternoon indoors in the cool, rather than sweltering outside yet again.

We utilized part of the time in our cool indoor space to write up the remaining cue sheets that we will need to get us to Texas where we will rejoin the Southern Tier route.
